When a 20-year-old gunman shot and killed 26 children and teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012, Shannon Watts was a  stay-at-home mom in Indiana. The day after the shooting, she was forced off the sidelines and into the advocacy career she is known for today as the founder and leader of Moms Demand Action, the nation’s largest grassroots group fighting gun violence in America.

In the aftermath of yet another senseless school shooting, this time in Texas, that left 21 students and teachers dead and countless others forever traumatized, we couldn’t think of a better place to donate this month’s billable hour than to support the incredible work they’ve done over this past decade.

While it’s true that our federal government has been slow to respond to the epidemic of gun violence in America, the reality is advocates like Shannon Watts and the million others involved in Moms Demand Action have been chipping away at this issue and changing minds on an individual basis at the local, state and federal level this entire time.

As we do each month in our spotlight of the nonprofits we support, we encourage you to learn more about this organization and the important work they’re doing to help make America’s communities safer from gun violence. More than that, we encourage you to lend your support in a way that is most meaningful to you.

Since March, Anthony Legal has made a monthly donation to a nonprofit that is doing the kind of work that needs to be done in this world. We have supported World Relief Kitchen, which mobilized quickly to provide warm meals to Ukrainian refugees following the outbreak of war in their country, the Syrian American Medical Society, which supports Syrian refugees around the world, as well as the Window of Love, which supports the local Nashville community.  We intend to continue this and hope that it makes a small difference in the world and inspires other lawyers to give back, as well.
